SCOC OVERVIEW
the Court hears a full range of court case types. Annually, the Court
handles an average of 500,000 case filings. In FY 2019-20, there was a
14.4% decrease in case filings from the prior year largely due to the
outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Of the 389,078 cases that
were filed in FY 2019-20, over 60% were criminal case filings involving
traffic matters.
The majority of the Court’s funding is provided by the State. Included
in the various cuts to the State’s budget this year is a $167.8 million
ongoing base reduction to the trial courts, resulting in a $13 million
budget shortfall for the Court. To face the economic crisis, Court
leadership has implemented a variety of cost-saving measures to
balance the budget while remaining focused on its mission, strategic
objectives, and core values.
