More Minorities Represented in the 2006-2007 Grand Jury Applicant Pool

Santa Ana - Recruitment efforts by the Orange County Superior Court and the Orange County Grand Jury Recruitment Committee resulted in the largest percentage of minorities, in recent years, to apply for the Grand Jury, announced Presiding Judge Nancy Wieben Stock.

“Although past recruitment efforts have netted a greater number of overall applicants, 21% of the 171 individuals who submitted applications for the 2006-2007 Grand Jury reflect Orange County’s diverse population,” said Stock. Those who applied to serve on the 2006-2007 Grand Jury include 133 Caucasians, 15 Latinos, 10 Asians, 6 African Americans, three Filipinos, two Native American Indian and two who identified themselves other than Caucasian. The number of female applicants increased to 34% from 29% the previous year. The average age of the applicants is 63.6 years old.

The Court and the Grand Jury Recruitment Committee aggressively canvassed Orange County citizens to serve on the 2006-2007 Grand Jury: 4,000 applications were mailed to prospective applicants, flyers were distributed to 1,000 companies and 80 minority organizations. The Court also held an informal meeting with community leaders to discuss ways to reach out to the community to attract more applicants from Orange County’s diverse population. The Court appreciates the work of the members of the current grand jury, judges, local public officials and the media for helping to inform the community about the grand jury selection process.

An orientation for all grand juror applicants is scheduled for Thursday, January 26 at 6:00 p.m. in Department C-1, 2nd Floor, Central Justice Center, 700 Civic Center Drive, West, Santa Ana. Following the orientation, the first step in the selection process will begin. Each qualifying applicant will be interviewed by two Superior Court judges and background investigations will be conducted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Judges of the Superior Court will then submit the nominations of qualified applicants into a random drawing from which 19 individuals will be selected to serve on the Grand Jury. The 2006-2007 Grand Jury term will begin July 3, 2006.
